What comes to mind when you think of June 3rd?

For many people in Korea, it's Election Day — a public holiday, a day to vote, or just a day off. But did you know it's also Deaf Day?

Deaf Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the identity of Deaf people as valued members of our society. At EQ4ALL, we wanted to take a moment to hold both of these meanings together.

Voting is how we make our voices heard in a democracy. But access to information — and access to communication — is just as fundamental a right. Yet many Deaf people still face everyday barriers in communication that most of us never think about.

Here are a few simple ways to make conversations more accessible:

When talking with a Deaf person:

✅ Rephrase or write it down instead of repeating the same words. 

✅ Choose a well-lit, quiet space for conversation. 

✅ Get their attention first — try waving or flicking the lights. 

✅ Speak at a natural pace. No need to exaggerate.

Small adjustments make a big difference.
